Acella Construction was hired by the Associates for Human Services(AHS) located in Taunton, Massachusetts to construct their new 15,000 square foot facility. One of the determining factors for the selection of Acella as their contractor was Acella’s willingness to work with the team to value engineer the project so that AHS could meet the budgets that had been prepared for the project. The Associates for Human Services is a not-for-profit organization servicing the Taunton area with programs such as Early Head Start, Early Intervention, Parent-Child Home Program, residential services for adults with learning disabilities and the Wise Adult Day Health program for adults over 55. The new facility was a pre-engineered metal building with split block and metal panel exterior walls and roofs. During the value engineering process, the original split block exterior walls were eliminated to achieve the required budget. However, during the buyout of the project and while finalizing all value engineering work, Acella was able to offer, at no additional cost to AHS, the split block façade.
The site for the project produced numerous challenges. As part of the project, an area of wetlands was relocated and thousands of cubic yards of structural fill material were brought on site to raise the level of the building pad and parking areas to allow for proper site drainage and sighting of the building. Another challenge was the placement of the foundations during the winter of 2004 which was extremely cold. With the use of ground heaters, we were able to complete the foundations during the winter months which allowed us to complete the project within the project schedule and allow AHS to relocate at the end of their former lease.
